Mooseheads Win Hosting Rights for 2019 Mastercard Memorial Cup

The Canadian Hockey League today announced, on behalf of the 2019 Mastercard Memorial Cup Site Selection Committee, that the Halifax Mooseheads Hockey Club will play host to the 101st edition of the league’s prestigious national championship.

“I am extremely pleased that the Halifax Mooseheads will be hosting the 2019 Memorial Cup. I would like to express my thanks to Premier McNeil and Mayor Savage for their support of our successful hosting proposal.  Our team and our fans look forward to showcasing one of Canada’s great sporting events in beautiful Halifax, Nova Scotia. We are ready!” Stated Mooseheads majority owner Bobby Smith.

The 101st Mastercard Memorial Cup will take place May 17-26, 2019, at Halifax’s Scotiabank Centre featuring the host Mooseheads along with the champions of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and the Western Hockey League competing in the traditional round-robin format.

“Congratulations to the Halifax Mooseheads on their successful bid to host the 2019 Memorial Cup,” said Carrie Cussons, President & CEO of Scotiabank Centre. “We are so proud to partner with the Mooseheads on this exciting event and welcome thousands of junior hockey fans to our community and our facility.“

The event coincides with the 25th anniversary season of the Halifax Mooseheads Hockey Club which has claimed the Mastercard Memorial Cup trophy once in 2013 and previously hosted the tournament once in 2000.

The Memorial Cup has a rich tradition that has shaped the way junior hockey is played in North America. The trophy was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919, in remembrance of the many soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice for Canada in the First World War.  In 2010 the Memorial Cup was rededicated to the memory of all fallen Canadian Military Personnel killed in combat serving our country.

The 100th edition of the Mastercard Memorial Cup will be hosted by the Regina Pats May 17-27, 2018, with all games to be broadcast live across Canada on Sportsnet and TVA Sports.
