Halifax Convention Centre Launches Food Sustainability Program
More than 10,000 meals donated in the last year.
HALIFAX, NS, April 30, 2026 – The Halifax Convention Centre is launching a food sustainability program aimed at reducing food waste, while supporting staff and local community organizations in need.
The program, called Bellies Before Bins, ensures leftover food is utilized effectively by reusing ingredients, serving staff, or donating to local non-profits. By diverting food from landfills to the community, the program demonstrates the Convention Centre’s leadership in sustainability within the Halifax community.
“At the Halifax Convention Centre, we are proud to make a meaningful impact on our city and province through initiatives such as Bellies Before Bins, a program created to ensure the food we purchase, prepare, and serve never goes to waste,” says Suzanne Fougere, President & CEO of Events East. “During the last year, we have donated more than 10,000 meals to local community organizations.”
Working with its partner, Second Harvest, the Halifax Convention Centre’s culinary team connects with organizations to donate prepared and excess food directly to local non-profits including, The Salvation Army, Eastern Passage Food Security Society, Millbrook Food Bank, Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank, and more.
Bellies Before Bins was developed with input from local community organizations and experts in food sustainability. The Convention Centre piloted the program for over a year prior to the public launch, allowing for continuous improvements based on real-world applications.
