New Milestone: Halifax Convention Centre and Scotiabank Centre surpass half a billion dollars in economic impact

Halifax Convention Centre & Scotiabank Centre Projected to Exceed Targets

New Milestone Surpasses Half a Billion Dollars in Economic Impact - 3.2 million Attendees, Convention Centre set to welcome nearly 40,000 this fall

As fall approaches the Halifax Convention Centre is preparing for one of the largest international conventions of the year with Oceans 2024.  The convention centre will welcome over 1500 delegates over four days later this month for the global marine conference, just a portion of the nearly 40,000 people who will attend events at the venue through fall, all contributing to a new milestone for events in Halifax.

Events East, the umbrella management organization of the Halifax Convention Centre and Scotiabank Centre, is reporting that their bookings at both venues this year will result in more than $500 million in economic impact and over 3.2 million attendees since 2018. It is an important milestone as Events East is seeing a new and emerging trend of bookings expanding into year-round periods that traditionally would have fewer events.  Summer and early fall have become more robust than ever before, exceeding targets at each venue and there is no sign of the trend reversing.

“When we opened the Halifax Convention Centre, we set out with a five-year strategic plan that would guide the sales and marketing strategies to attract events to our venues,” said Carrie Cussons, President and CEO of Events East. “The attraction of major national and international conferences like Oceans 2024 and marquee sports and entertainment events like the 2023 IIHF World Juniors and the 2024 JUNO Awards has culminated in this new benchmark of generating half a billion dollars in economic impact, further underscoring how essential our infrastructure is for the city and province.”

The break down shows that since 2018, the Halifax Convention Centre will host nearly 1000 events, half a million guests, and generate $305M in economic impact by year’s end.  In that same timeframe, Scotiabank Centre has hosted over 600 events, welcoming 2.8M guests, and generated over $226M in economic impact.

Combined, Events East has exceeded its key performance targets, including projections for 2024-2025, both venues have:

  • Generated over half a billion dollars in economic impact for the city and province.
  • Hosted more than 3.2M guests and attendees.
  • Attracted and hosted over 1,500 local and major events.
